"You have to be extremely self-motivated and need a clear understanding about exactly what is involved in a course. Be very proactive with the instructor and not timid about asking questions. Never think that an online course is easy or less work - it is a lot more work than a regular course. Also, SAVE EVERY THING!!!(Student, English Class)"Self-discipline, self-confidence and a strong work ethic are important. READ THE ASSIGNMENTS and be very careful about due dates. In a regular class, you might have more flexibility about due dates. In an online classes, due dates tend to be rigid."(Faculty Member, Business Class)"Be sure that the syllabus matches the term you are taking - otherwise you can get very mixed up!!! Keep copies of every thing you send in - a lot of stuff gets lost. Keep in constant contact with the teacher and NEVER get behind!"(Student, Psychology Class)"I loved my class but you have to be careful in what you choose to take online. Got to be motivated and have to check the course home page at least everyday. Online courses require a lot of discipline, it is not a short cut to an easy class. Getting a question answered immediately is not easy."(Student, Computer Class)"Basic computer skills are very, very important. You have to be able to send e-mail and work with attachments at the very least to start an online class. I encourage all students to save work on a disk before mailing and to copy themselves on any work that they sent to me. That way they can see exactly what I have received and have a record of what was sent. Remember that the Internet is unpredictable! Also, be sure and do not forget to read the supplemental material on the site - that's what you would be getting in class and is posted for a reason."(Faculty Member, Computer Class)"Communicate well with your instructor, apply yourself to keep up and stay on top of the work. I wish my class had more interaction, but it was fun and I learned a lot about my computer. Jump in and play with the software from the first day. There is lots of information available. For example, you can find your grades and the class averages, but it is not that obvious where it is located.(Student, English Class)"Willingness to try something new, to be flexible and adapt to a new and sometimes difficult situation. The student must be willing to learn on their own. Document everything. Successful students check with the instructor weekly to see if everything is up to date - just a quick e-mail is great. Successful students do not assume ANYTHING -- ask questions. E-mail is your friend! Also use the course website, nothing is on there by accident! Open all those links!(Faculty Member, Business Class)
