Using Windows Media Encoder

The following instructions are for using Windows Media Encoder 9.0 to take your existing recorded videocam video and converting and compressing it to a smaller Windows Media File, which you would then upload into webct.  If you don't have Windows Media Encoder 9.0, you can download it at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx. For help using your webcam, you will need to consult your webcam operating instructions.

  1. Open Windows Media Encoder.
  2. The New Session window should pop up.
  3. Click on Convert a file.
  4. Click on Ok.
  5. Choose your Source file --> Click on Browse to find your file to convert. (.avi, .mpg, etc.)
  6. Under Output file, type in the location and name of the file you want to output and add .wmv as the file extension.
  7. Click on Next.
  8. Under How do you want to distribute your content?, choose File download.
  9. Click on Next.

  17. Wait.
  18. Once it finishes converting the file, an Encoding Results window will pop up telling you what it did.
  19. Click on Play Output File. It will launch Windows Media Player and play your video.
  20. Once it's finished playing, close Windows Media Player.
  21. Then in WM Encoder, click on Close.
  22. You can now close WM Encoder.
  23. When it asks "Do you want to save the session before continuing?," click No.
  24. Now, log into your webct class, go to the area you need to upload your video and browse to find it on your computer.  Remember, you are looking for a file that ends in .wmv, not your original webcam file.
